If your dog is suffering from mild to moderate anxiety, it may be worth discussing over-the-counter (OTC) options with your veterinarian.

Some natural remedies for dog anxiety include nutritional supplementshomeopathic treatmentspheromones and calming aids that you can try to help reduce your dog’s stress.

Here’s a breakdown of OTC dog anxiety treatments you can discuss with your veterinarian.

Calming Supplements for Dogs

Anxiety supplements for dogs are most likely to be successful in mild to moderate cases.

The following active ingredients are commonly used in dog calming supplements.

L-Theanine

Supplements that contain L-theanine (like Virbac Anxitane tablets or VetriScience Composure chews) are thought to work by increasing serotonin, dopamine and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels in the central nervous system.

S-Adenosylmethionine (SAMe)

SAMe for dogs (like Nutramax Denosyl tablets or Virbac Novifit supplements) works in the same way that it does for people. These supplements are thought to work by increasing serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain.

Using Homeopathic Treatments to Help With Dog Anxiety

Scientific evidence is lacking to support the effectiveness of homeopathic treatments, but some owners do use them and report being satisfied with the results.

Homeopathy is based on the theory that “like treats like;” in other words, it works by stimulating the body’s natural ability to respond to stressors.

Homeopathy gets around the problem of potentially making matters worse by diluting the active ingredients to the point where the solution is only “remembering” their presence.

Rescue Remedy is a popular homeopathic treatment for anxiety in dogs. It’s made from an extremely diluted combination of five flower essences—star-of-Bethlehem, rock rose, cherry plum, impatiens and clematis.

HomeoPet’s Anxiety Relief is another popular option. The many active ingredients in this preparation include calcium phosphate, jimsonweed and valerian root.

Calming Aids and Dog-Appeasing Pheromones

Pheromone therapy can be a good option when dogs are only mildly anxious.

The dog-appeasing pheromone is a version of the hormone that canine mothers produce to calm their puppies while they are nursing. Products containing the dog-appeasing pheromone are available as diffusers, sprays and collars.

Calming aids like The Anxiety Wrap or the ThunderShirt provide consistent body pressure, which seems to help some dogs with anxiety.

These products are most useful when dogs become anxious only under particular conditions, like during a thunderstorm for a trip to the veterinarian.

A Holistic Approach to Treating Dog Anxiety

In all but the mildest forms of dog anxiety, combining one or more forms of treatment (prescription medications, nutritional supplements, pheromones, etc.) with a behavioral modification protocol offers the best chance of success.

Behavioral modification for anxiety typically involves teaching dogs to remain calm when they are exposed to mild versions of their triggers, rewarding them and gradually increasing the intensity of their exposure as long as they remain calm.

If you are unsure of why your dog is acting anxious, talk to your veterinarian or a veterinary behaviorist. They can make a diagnosis and determine the best course of action, whether that includes OTC calming solutions, behavioral modification protocols and/or anti-anxiety medications.Featured Image: iStock.com/Kerkez

Wow great articles to share

Good morning! How is your week so far? I hope your doing great, staying safe and like many in my neighborhood getting re-modeling projects done.

I received the news letter for Pet MD. There are some really great articles. I’m going to share more than a couple with you

Have a great rest of the week, stay safe and make the most of this time at home.

~Tricia, Rudy and Trixie

Bonding.

It’s a heart warming feeling to see Rudy and Trixie play together. There is still some questions between them but no barking growling or scary behavior.🐕🙏❤️

Trixie day 3

You would never know we just met and adopted the sweet girl. This is the 2nd day of our daily park pack.

Just a reminder she is 8 years old, just moved in. I can’t believe she spent 2 1/2 years in doggy jail. The shelter listed her intake as 10/2013 by POS Owner. I 💕 it.

Rudy and Trixie

These two were meant to be. I joke they are twins, they have pee’d at the same time. It’s great. If you get one you get both. They will sleep apart and lay separately but they both graze, leave the same amount of food in the bowl, like and dislike the same foods.

It’s the best situation we could ask for. I talk to the others that have left us and know they will help guide them. I also, believe that with our history there was a dog out there and there was, that found her way to our home.

Rescue is the best.

Meet Trixie…

I don’t have any real pictures yet. I’ll get a good one.

Trixie is an 8 year old Border Collie. She’s had the good and bad in life. She was turned into the Los Angeles animal shelter at a year old. I’m trying to figure out for how long. The story has been told that my – follow closely. My sister told me my Brother-in-laws cousin had a dog he was mis-treating

The story….. His uncle saw a dog always running from his neighbor. He asked to take the dog and so he did. He trained her, treated and took care of her. A couple months ago he died. His son. My Brother-in-laws cousin. He had two other dogs, one being Trixie’s sister, who slept on the bed, were treated well but Trixie was the opposite. When Jamie picked her up she was bloody, fur missing from fleas and allergies. She was safe. Vet visit baths but she was still not home. A week with her and she was being stubborn showing signs of not fitting in. We drove out and met her. We knew they didn’t match so we told my sister we would take her.

Her new life. My sister dropped her off Thursday. It feels like she has always been here. Even taking her to the park to meet the Park Pack, she broke away from my husband played ball until she couldn’t, played with the park pack as if she was a veteran member. A lot of the main members were there Luna – Rottweiler, Mable – pit, Polly – Labrador (overly hyper) Sam – Bassett Hound and Rudy’s best bud and others. I am ashamed of myself for not video taping. I was so excited I was lost in the moment. I’ll get a good picture but here are a few

We are so excited to have her join us. 8 dogs now. 4 pound puppies 4 that found their way to us. Thank you Lord!
